This Month In Ms. Murtaugh's Office |
October In Mrs. Murtaugh's Office:
October Guidance will focus on one aspect of diversity, race. Indiana School Counseling Competencies for 4th-6th grade include: -- ability to describe diversity in people in our world -- ability to demonstrate respect of diversity -- ability to apply effective coping skills in response to modern day issues -- ability to demonstrate care and ethical responsibility to peers, teachers, and school community Fourth, fifth and six grade lessons vary slightly, but include reading Let's Talk About Race by Julius Lester and using the Colors of the World Crayola crayons to match their skin tone as part of an art activity. These crayons were created after a young girl could not find the correct color of her skin while creating a self-portrait. The students actually read this article and watched this video as part of their Social Studies, Scholastic News reading last month! What a perfect tie-in ito our lesson! https://sn4.scholastic.com/issues/2020-21/083120/a-color-for-everyone.html#On%20Level |
September In Mrs. Murtaugh's Office:
Worry Stones! Mrs. Murtaugh wrote a grant through Parent Council to receive funding for a guidance lesson on worry, anxiety, and coping skills. With it, we talk about the book The Worry Stone, and the kids make their own worry stone as a keep sake. Ask your child about theirs!
